HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Corey Stevens, a 5-10, 170-pound outfielder from Hinds Community College in Utica, Miss., to a letter of intent and grant-in-aid for the 2007-08 academic year. This marks the second signee of the spring signing period and seventh signing overall for the Golden Eagles.
"I'm glad that Corey has decided to attend Southern Miss," Palmer said. "He is a good athlete who has speed and can hit for average and power. He certainly has a chance to come in and compete for playing time right away."
Stevens was named the team's best offensive player for the past two years and was named MACJAC All-State and NJCAA All-Region last year as a freshman. The announcement for this year's all-state and all-region teams hasn't been made at this time.
As a sophomore this year, Stevens hit .412 with 11 doubles, three triples, three home runs, 36 RBIs and 11-of-13 stolen bases. He helped lead Hinds CC to a 27-15 record this season and advanced to the second round of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges Central Division Championship.
Last year as a freshman, he hit .370 with 15 doubles, four home runs and 32 RBIs.
Stevens was a four-year letterwinner for Clinton High School in Clinton, Miss. He hit .505 as a senior in 2005 and was a two-time all-district and all-region selection. He was named to the all-state team as a senior and helped Clinton advance to the North State semifinals.
Southern Miss already has signed Josh Billeaud (RHP, 6-4, 210, LSU-Eunice CC), Anthony Doss (OF, 6-1, 180, Northwest Rankin HS), Wendell Fairley (OF, 6-2, 175, George County High School in Lucedale, Miss.), Brian Leach (RHP, 6-4, 190, NW Mississippi CC), Matt Warren (RHP, 6-5, 190, Petal HS, Petal, Miss.) and Wade Weathers (LHP, 6-1, 195, Meridian CC, in Meridian, Miss.).
