Mississippi State Downs Softball, 10-6

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Mississippi State notched four runs in the third inning en route to a 10-6 victory over Southern Miss, tonight, at the Southern Miss Softball Complex, with 795 in attendance, the second-largest crowd in the complex's history.
Katie Cooley recorded a three-run homer, her first of two for the night, to score Hayle Guess and Courtney Bures and lift the Bulldogs over the Lady Eagles, 5-3. Katie Johnson crossed the plate for the final run of the inning, reaching home on a sacrifice fly from Nakita Boyce and extending the lead to 6-3.
Southern Miss answered back with two runs in the bottom of the third to cut Mississippi State's lead to one. Megan Hill led off for the Lady Eagles, hitting a single down the left field line, advancing to third on Lauren Castellvi's single to right and scoring when Kristin Pilgrim grounded out to second base. On the next play, Allison Bullard doubled to left center to score pinch runner Brittney Pigott from third.
Cooley added two more runs for the Bulldogs in the fourth inning, hitting her second home run of the game, a one-out two-RBI shot over left center.
Bullard closed the gap for Southern Miss in the bottom of the sixth, recording her fourth home run of the season to bring the score to 8-6.
Southern Miss (17-31) finished the contest with 10 hits, two each from Jennifer Fox, Castellvi and Bullard and one each from Logan James, Hill, Pilgrim and Prouty. Pilgrim tallied three RBIs in the contest, two in the first inning to give the Lady Eagles the 2-0 lead.
Mississippi State (31-21) recorded 16 hits, three each from Chelsea Bramlett and Cooley, two each from Guess, Bures, Johnson and Michelle Kinney and one each from sisters Sammie Jo Bailey and Jessica Bailey.
Kelli Miller (15-9) received the win for the Bulldogs, throwing 4.2 innings, striking out two batters and walking one. Samantha Davis (6-10) was credited with tonight's loss, throwing a complete game, her 11th of the season, striking out three batters and walking two.
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend, traveling to Tulsa, Okla., to face Conference USA opponent Tulsa in a three-game series. Play begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28, which is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
