Baseball Hosts Louisiana-Monroe in Midweek Contest

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - v All Southern Miss games will be carried on the radio and on-line at www.SouthernMiss.com. Wednesday's game will be carried locally on WXHB-96.5 FM. This marks the 51st meeting between the two schools with Southern Miss holding a 36-14 series advantage. Last month, the two teams met in Pearl, Miss., with the Golden Eagles taking a 9-5 win on March 20. The two teams split a pair of games last year as Southern Miss won the first meeting in Hattiesburg on March 7, 18-5, and dropped a 2-1 decision in Monroe, La., on March 22.
The Golden Eagles (22-15, 4-8 Conference USA) are coming off a 2-2 week, including a midweek win against No. 13 Ole Miss, 4-2, in Hattiesburg and then dropped 2-of-3 against No. 24 Tulane in a three-week conference weekend series, losing Friday's game, 7-5, winning the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, 5-2, before dropping the second game, 7-1.
Louisiana-Monroe (22-15, 11-6 Sun Belt) is coming off a 3-2 week, including a midweek 10-8 win against Northwestern State, then a midweek loss at LSU-Shreveport, 17-11, before splitting a pair of games with Florida International, losing 9-5, and winning 5-3.
Southern Miss his hitting .280 with 53 doubles, five triples and 21 home runs, while Louisiana-Monroe is hitting .283 with 77 doubles, 11 triples and 36 home runs. The Golden Eagle pitching staff has posted a 3.95 ERA with 257 strikeouts, only 113 walks and opponent hitters are batting .259 against them. The WarHawk pitching staff has posted a 5.29 ERA with 266 strikeouts, 114 walks and opponent hitters are batting .285 against them.
Southern Miss will send redshirt junior right-hander Mike Cashion to the mound to face Louisiana-Monroe senior left-hander Daniel Roberts.
Cashion, who hails from Clinton, Miss., located near Pearl, has registered a 1-0 record with a 4.80 ERA in 15.0 innings pitched. He has struck out four batters, walked 11 and held opponents to a .236 batting average. In his last appearance against Ole Miss last Wednesday, he earned his first victory of the season, pitching 5.0 innings, giving up one run on six hits, three walks and striking out one batter.
Roberts has pitched in five games and started two, posting an 0-2 record with a 9.64 ERA in 9.1 innings pitched. He has struck out nine and walked nine.
The Golden Eagles are led offensively by junior first baseman Trey Sutton, who is hitting .336 with nine doubles, two triples, four home runs, 24 walks and 27 RBIs. Redshirt junior designated hitter Trey Cuevas is hitting .330 with three doubles, a team-high eight homers, 13 hit by pitches and 25 RBIs. Sophomore shortstop Brian Dozier is hitting .308 with seven doubles, 10 walks and 12 RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Michael Ewing is hitting .297 with three doubles, two triples, four home runs, a team-leading 26 walks and a team-leading 28 RBIs.
The WarHawks are led by junior outfielder Dexter Fontenot, who is hitting .347 with 10 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 20 walks and 29 RBIs. Senior infielder Bo Bowman is hitting .328 with 12 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 29 RBIs. Junior outfielder A.J. Siggers is hitting .326 with five doubles, two home runs and 20 RBIs.
After Wednesday's game, Southern Miss hosts UAB for a three-game Conference USA weekend series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field
