Men's Golf Signs Darren Chapman for 2007-08

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss men's golf coach Jerry Weeks announced the signing of Darren Chapman (Destin, Fla.) to a national letter of intent for the 2007-08 academic year.
Chapman, who attends Ft. Walton Beach High School, was a two-time All-County first team selection and was also the team's captain during his junior and senior seasons. He opened his senior campaign by posting a 66 in a high school match at Indian Bayou, breaking both the school and county record. He also owns the middle school record in the county after firing 32 over nine holes during his eighth-grade year. During the fall, Chapman finished third overall in the regional championship.
Ranked No. 16 in the class of 2007 in the state of Florida, the 5-foot-10 golfer enjoyed tremendous successes on the American Junior Golf Tour which includes a victory at the Houchens Industries Junior Open qualifier at The Club at Old Stone in Alvaton, Ky. In addition, Chapman garnered the Marvin DeBolt Daily News Junior Classic in Ft. Walton Beach, collecting scores of 76 and 65.
His rounds of 74, 70 and 71 at the 2006 Future Masters in Dothan, Ala., enabled him to finish 20th out of 235 golfers, while he also captured a 10th-place tie at the AJGA Randy Smith Classic last summer with rounds of 69, 75 and 71.
At 14 years-old in 2003, he qualified for an international tournament that utilizes the Ryder Cup format and faced opponents from Sweden and Russia.
Chapman is not limited with his success on the course. The junior and senior class Vice President is a member of the National Honor Society, the Beta Club, the Leadership Club, the Key Club, a Viking Scholar at his school as well as winning the Norseman Award, as selected by his fellow students.
