HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Matt Warren, a 6-5, 190-pound right-handed pitcher from Petal High School in Petal, Miss., to a letter of intent and grant-in-aid for the 2007-08 academic year. This marks the first signee of the spring signing period and sixth signing overall for the Golden Eagles.
"I'm very excited that Matt has decided to attend Southern Miss and become a Golden Eagle," said Palmer. "He has the same underneath delivery style like former All-Americans Daniel Best and Austin Tubb. He throws three pitches for strikes, fastball (82-83 mph), change-up and has a good breaking pitch. His potential has a very high ceiling and he has a chance to come in and make an immediate impact with our program.
He currently has an 8-0 record with three saves and a 0.15 ERA in 48 innings pitched and struck out 68 batters as a starter and short reliever. He was selected a preseason All-American by Louisville Slugger as well as being named to The Clarion Ledger's Dandy Dozen. He has helped Petal High School to a 21-4 record.
As a junior last season, he was an all-district performer and was selected to play in the Sun Belt Classic at Oklahoma City, Okla., which featured the top juniors in the nation. He was 6-2 with a save and a 1.68 ERA in 66.2 innings pitched and struck out 96 batters. He helped Petal to a 33-5 record, the South State Championship and advance to the state 4A championship round.
Southern Miss already has signed Josh Billeaud (RHP, 6-4, 210, LSU-Eunice CC), Anthony Doss (OF, 6-1, 180, Northwest Rankin HS), Wendell Fairley (OF, 6-2, 175, George County High School in Lucedale, Miss.), Brian Leach (RHP, 6-4, 190, NW Mississippi CC) and Wade Weathers (LHP, 6-1, 195, Meridian CC, in Meridian, Miss.) in the early signing period.
