Baseball Downs LSU, 5-3, in Series Finale

BATON ROUGE, La. - Trey Sutton finished with three hits and an RBI, James Ewing had three hits and Bailey Hartel finished with two hits and two RBIs to lead No. 26 Southern Miss to a 5-3 win in the final game of the three-game weekend series against LSU at Alex Box Stadium, today, in front of 7,433 in attendance.
Down 2-1 in the fifth inning, Southern Miss scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead. Sutton hit a one-out single through the left side, advanced to second on Dozier's single to right field. James Ewing hit a scorching line drive to second baseman Chris Jackson, who instead of turning a double play, let the ball go through his legs, allowing Sutton to score and Dozier to advance to third. Michael Ewing walked to load the bases, before Hartel hit a bloop single to right field to plate Dozier and Ewing.
David Clark (2-1) won his second consecutive game, pitching 7.2 innings, giving up three runs on four hits, walking three and striking out two batters. Tyler Conn came on in relief of Clark in the eighth inning, giving up one hit and one walk. Patrick Ezell (5) pitched the ninth inning, retiring the side to earn his fifth save in five-straight appearances.
Robert Lara (0-1) came on in relief of LSU starting pitcher T.J. Forrest in the fourth inning and was credited with the loss. He pitched 1.1 innings, giving up two unearned runs on two hits and struck out one batter. The Tigers used six pitchers during the game.
Southern Miss (12-4) scored five runs on 13 hits, while LSU (11-7) scored three runs on five hits and committed two errors. The Golden Eagles left 10 runners on bases, while the Tigers stranded five runners.
LSU cut the Golden Eagle lead in half in the fifth inning, scoring a run to make the score 4-3. Jordan Mayer led off the inning with a single through the left side, moved to second when Ryan Schimpf walked and scored on Michael Hollander's single up the middle. Jackson flew out to center, and Jared Mitchell hit a grounder to pitcher David Clark, who turned and threw it to Dozier, who completed the double play.
Southern Miss added another run in the eighth inning to extend its lead to 5-3, the final outcome. With two outs in the inning, Bo Davis walked, stole second and third base, and scored on Sutton's single down the left field line.
In the eighth inning, LSU tried to rally once again. Mitchell hit a two-out single to right field, before Blake Dean singled through the left side to put runners on first and second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Clark, before Sean Ochinko walked to load the bases. Steven Waguespeck grounded out to second to end the inning.
Southern Miss took the early lead once again in the first inning, 1-0. James Ewing hit a two-out single through the left side, moved to second on a wild pitch from Forrest and scored on Adkins' double to left center.
LSU tied the game in the third inning when Jordan Mayer hit a solo homer to left center. They added another run in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Dean was walked to lead off the inning, stole second, advanced to third on Ochinko's ground out to third and scored on a wild pitch from Clark.
Mayer led LSU with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, Hollarnder finished with a hit and an RBI and Mitchell and Dean each finished with a hit each.
Southern Miss hosts Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday, March 13, at "The Pete" at 6:30 p.m., then travel to Mobile, Ala., to face South Alabama on Wednesday, March 14, before coming home to host Kent State for a three-game weekend series. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's game begins at 1 p.m., and Sunday's contest is at Noon.
