HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - UTEP's Jarecia Hughes adds to her list of honors as she was named to the five-member Conference-USA All-Defensive and All-Freshman teams, the league office announced Tuesday. C-USA women's basketball coaches, sports information directors and selected media members participate in the voting.
Hughes had a solid rookie campaign. She led the Miners in scoring (12.7), assists (5.2), three-pointers made (31) and steals (2.8). She has also turned in a team-high 20 double-digit games. Additionally, she has already set the UTEP rookie record for single-season assists and is closing in on overall single-season program mark. Hughes also was named to the All-C-USA third team, becoming the first Miner since 2002-03 to garner all-league accolades.
Southern Miss' Lauren Pittman earned her first Conference USA honor after being named to the All-Freshman team. Pittman becomes the fifth Southern Miss player overall named to the all-freshman team and the fourth straight. Pittman is averaging 7.6 points per game.
Tulsa's Jillian Robbins topped the all-defensive team as she led the league in both steals (3.32) and rebounds (11.7) per game, plus ranks third in scoring (19.8) and blocked shots (1.75). Robbins' steals, rebounds and point averages rank among the NCAA Top 20, including No. 6 in boards per game.
D'Aundra Henry of Tulane, Lauren Neaves of Rice and East Carolina's Jasmine Young were also named to the C-USA All-Defensive team. Henry, who redshirted the 2006 season due to injuries, has had a stellar senior campaign as she leads the team and ranks third in the conference in steals, pocketing 2.8 per game. She also ranks second on the team in scoring (11.9) and third in minutes (28.6) played.
Neaves, Rice's all-time leading rebounder with more than 1,100 boards, averaged 15.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game as well as swatted away 51 shots this season. She currently ranks 11th in the NCAAs in rebounds per game and has been named C-USA Player of the week twice. Neaves' 13 double-doubles is third most among C-USA players this year.
Young, 2006 C-USA co-Freshman of the Year, tops the Pirate charts in assists (5.21), steals (2.52) and minutes (35.2) per game. Her assist and steal averages rank third and fifth-best, respectively, in the league.
Joining Hughes on the 2007 all-freshman team is teammate Timika Williams, followed by SMU's Delisha Willis, Alyssa Hammond of Marshall and Southern Miss' Lauren Pittman. Hughes (12.7), Wills (9.4) and Williams (9.4) are the top three C-USA freshmen scorers. Hughes also led the rookie class in assists and Williams topped the rebounding chart (6.9).
