HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Freshman Megan Hill's triple to right field scored Logan James from second base in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie en route to a 9-1 victory over Jackson State, tonight, at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in front of 432 in attendance.
Melissa Prouty walked to lead off the third inning and advanced to second base on Allison Bullard's sacrifice bunt, before scoring on James' double to center to tie the game at 1-1.
"There were some definite highlights with some of our younger kids stepping up and getting key hits at key times," Southern Miss Head Coach Gay McNutt said. "We've never been a team that gives up, and we fought back again tonight to get the win. It's a good win, but our level of play will have to step up to win against the teams that we'll be playing in the upcoming tournament."
Southern Miss (3-4) scored five runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to enforce the eight-run rule after five innings.
Jackson State (3-6) scored first when Amanda Boggan hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Brandi Farmer.
Lauren Castellvi started the fourth inning with a double to left center, before pinch runner Brittney Pigott advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Brandi Alonzo's double to right field. An error by Jackson State's third baseman (Rashae Barber) sent Prouty to first base and Alonzo to third. Prouty stole second and advanced to third when Katelyn Jackson overthrew Barber at third, which allowed Alonzo to score. Prouty scored on a passed ball, before Hill added the final two runs of the inning on her two-run homer.
Castellvi added a triple in the fifth inning to plate Kristin Pilgrim and then scored on a wild pitch to end the game.
Junior Shea Naramore (3-4) earned her third win of the year, pitching a complete game, giving up one run on three hits, walking five and striking out one. JSU starting pitcher Alicia Bonner pitched four innings, giving up seven runs on six hits and walking three. Jessica Villegas came on in relief of Bonner in the fifth inning and finished the game, giving up two runs on two hits and walking two.
Southern Miss travels to Baton Rouge, La., this weekend to compete in LSU's Purple and Gold Challenge. The Lady Eagles' first game of the tournament is set for Friday, February 23, at 11 a.m., facing Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
