Women's Basketball Team Hosts South Alabama

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Southern Miss women's basketball team tries to get back on the winning track, hosts South Alabama, Dec. 4. Game time is set for 7 p.m., and will be broadcasted over WXHB-FM 96.5 with the "Voice of the Lady Eagles" Jason Baker providing play-by-play action with former coach Kay James as the color analyst.
Southern Miss (6-2) is coming off a 76-74 loss at Jacksonville State when the Gamecocks hit a shot as time expired, giving the Lady Eagles their second-consecutive loss. Senior Liz Biland scored a game- and career-high 22 points, while Pauline Love recorded her sixth double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Amber Eugene with 11 points and nine assists.
Love continues to lead the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 18.5 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Eugene is averaging 11.8 points, while Biland is adding 10.4 points per game.
As a team, the Lady Eagles are averaging 78.5 points and 41.1 rebounds, while shooting 49.4 percent from the field and 73.2 percent from the line. Southern Miss has connected on 40-of-113 threes for 35.4 percent.
South Alabama is 7-1, after winning of its last three games. The Jaguars defeated Stetson, 54-43, Saturday. Head Coach Rick Pietri is in his eighth season at the helm of the Jaguar program. Pietri returns seven letterwinners, including three starters from last year's squad that finished 14-16. Shakira Nettles leads the team in scoring with 12.0 points, while Monique Jones is second on the team, averaging 10.9 points. Ra'Shawna Sippio, Patriece Brunner and Karina Sproal are averaging 5.9 rebounds apiece to lead the team. As a team, the Jaguars are averaging 65.2 points and 41.5 rebounds, while shooting 39.0 percent from the field and 63.3 percent from the line. USA is holding its opponents to 32.7 percent shooting from the field, while forcing opponents into 20.4 turnovers per game.
This is the 21st meeting between the two teams. Southern Miss leads the series, 13-7. South Alabama has won the last four meetings.
Following the South Alabama game, Southern Miss plays at Louisiana Tech, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m.
