Southern Miss Falls To UAB In Close Match, 3-2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Southern Miss volleyball dropped a five-gamer to UAB, 3-2, by a score of 30-24, 20-30, 14-30, 36-34, 12-15, in Conference USA action on Sunday.
Southern Miss (10-18, 1-11) had three players record double-doubles led by Ashley Petrinec with 17 kills and 14 digs, followed by Mari Ruddick with 14 kills and 10 digs and Morgan Johnson added 11 kills and 11 digs. Angela Hlavaty also added 11 kills. Libero Maia Ivanova recorded 21 digs and Amy Flarity chipped in 10 digs. Katie Matlock had a season-high 52 assists and 10 digs.
Fernanda Domingos tallied a match-high 22 kills for UAB (19-7, 9-3) with teammates Andrea Lalic recording 14 kills, Lilly Domingos and Casey Dent adding 13 kills apiece. Aleksandra Vujovic also added 10 kills and 13 digs.
Southern Miss fought back from a 10-5 deficit in game one, using a 15-9 run to take a 20-19 lead. UAB regained the lead on back-to-back kills. The Eagles, then, scored seven straight points for a 27-21 lead. Southern Miss closed out the game on a Johnson kill and Flarity ace for a 30-24 win.
The Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 lead in game two, before UAB used a 12-6 run to push ahead 13-12. From there, both teams battle back and forth until UAB broke an 18-18 tie, scoring five straight points, taking the lead for good on its way to a 30-20 win.
UAB controlled game three from the start, taking a 6-0 lead and not looking back. Southern Miss was able to get within three, 10-7, but that was as close as the Eagles would get, as UAB won game three, 30-14.
Game four turned into a marathon game that featured 10 ties and five lead changes. UAB took an early 11-5 lead, before the Eagles rallied to get within one, 19-18. UAB then added three more points to build a 22-20 lead. From there, the Eagles reeled off the next five points, taking a 25-22 lead. However, UAB quickly responded to tie the game at 25-25. Southern Miss pushed ahead 28-26, but UAB answered again with a kill, cutting the lead to one, 28-27. Petrinec then put down a kill, giving the Eagles a two-point advantage, 29-27, and Ivanova serving for the game, but a UAB kill, a Southern Miss attack error and another UAB kill put the Blazers ahead 30-29. From there, the lead went back and forth until Southern Miss got a kill and ended the game on an ace for the 36-34 win.
Southern Miss started game five with a 6-3 lead. After changing sides when Southern Miss scored the eighth point, UAB then used a 5-2 run to tie the game at 10-10. UAB finally pushed ahead, 11-10, on a block by Lilly Domingos. With the game tied at 12-12, UAB was able to close out the game on three straight points for a 15-12 win.
Southern Miss returns to action, when the team travels to Marshall on Friday and East Carolina on Sunday.
