Southern Miss Volleyball Loses to Memphis in Three

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - Memphis placed three players in double-digit kills in defeating Southern Miss in three straight games by a score of 31-29, 30-22, 30-25, in Conference USA volleyball action Friday.
Sarah Bury led the Tigers (19-9, 8-3) with a match-high 18 kills, followed by Ashley Liford with a double-double, 12 kills and 16 digs and Shelby Burton added 11 kills.
Ashley Petrinec and Angela Hlavaty led Southern Miss (10-17, 1-10) with nine kills apiece, Maia Ivanova had 11 digs. The Golden Eagles tallied nine service aces, led by Katie Matlock with four.
Southern Miss jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Memphis quickly erased the lead scoring four straight points. The teams battled to a 12-12 tie before Memphis pushed ahead on three straight kills by Bury. The Tigers led by as many as five points, 20-15, before the Eagles used a 7-2 run to tie the game at 22-all. From there, the game was tied four more times before Memphis scored the last two points for a 31-29 win in game one.
Game two started much like game with the Eagles jumping out to an early lead and Memphis putting together 5-1 run in taking the lead for good. The Tigers increased their lead to 12 points, 22-10, with Bury doing most of the damage, notching six of her eight kills during the stretch. Memphis won game two, 30-22.
Game three started with Memphis taking an early lead and maintained it throughout the game for a 30-25 win. Six Memphis players recorded at least two kills, while Petrinec put down five kills for Southern Miss.
Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday against visiting UAB in a 12 p.m., match.
