Miners Rally to Defeat Lady Eagles in Conference USA Volleyball

EL PASO, Texas -- - EL PASO, Texas - Southern Miss' Ashley Petrinec posted a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs, but it was not enough as Southern Miss fell to UTEP in four games by a score of 30-21, 21-30, 19-30, 21-30 in Conference USA action Friday night.
Mari Ruddick added 11 kills, while Maia Ivanova led the team with 14 digs.
Amy Sanders led UTEP with 14 kills, followed by Catherine Chavez with 12 and Daidre Mendenhall chipped in 11. Elsa Reyes led the Miners with 18 digs.
Southern Miss opened the match, taking game one by a score of 30-21. Ruddick and Petrinec combined for seven kills and took advantage of nine UTEP hitting errors. The Eagles had an attack percentage of .300.
UTEP took game two, 30-21, after the Eagles had 12 attack errors and hit .022. UTEP recorded four aces and put up 6.0 team blocks.
The Miners built an 11-4 lead as Southern Miss struggled offensively in game three, losing 30-19. The Eagles finished the game with -.115 attack percentage.
The Miners broke an 11-11 tie, using an 11-5 run to take the lead for good. Southern Miss continued to struggle offensively, finishing the game with 14 attack errors.
The Lady Eagles return to action on Sunday when they travel to Tulane for a 1 p.m., match.
