HATTIESBURG, MISS.- The Southern Miss baseball team opened practice on Monday, Jan. 22, and was finally able to take advantage of good weather the last half of the week.
"I think we have had a good week of practice," Palmer said. "We have had to fight the weather a little bit, but we are getting their arms and legs in shape. Everyone has been active in practice, and they seem to be excited to be out here."
Palmer also said that freshmen Todd McInnis has been looking good, throwing in the bullpen, and junior Drew Carson has been hitting the ball extremely well this week. He is expecting Carson to step up this season.
"Carson was a part-time player last year, but he had a solid fall and has had a good start this spring," Palmer added. "I am looking for him to have an outstanding year."
The only injury of concern was junior pitcher Mike Cashion, who will not be able to pitch for a while, due to ongoing problems with his shoulder.
The Golden Eagles open up their season on Feb. 16-18, hosting the Coca-Coca Southern Miss Baseball Classic, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Louisville will face Northwestern State in game one at Noon, and Southern Miss will host Southern Illinois at 4 p.m..
Saturday's first game will feature Northwestern State and Southern Illinois at Noon and Southern Miss and Louisville at 4 p.m. Sunday's game time will change as the first game between Southern Illinois and Louisville will begin at 11 a.m., and Southern Miss will host Northwestern State at 3 p.m.
