Men's Tennis Competes in First Day of Rice Invitational

HOUSTON, Texas - Southern Miss men's tennis competed in the 10th Annual Rice University/Downtown Club at the Met Collegiate Indoor Invitational on Friday, producing results for a promising spring campaign.
In singles action, Diego Machuca was victorious over Nicklos Bateman of Prairie View A&M, 7-5, 6-4, but was later defeated by Clemson's Rok Bizjak, 6-2, 6-2.
Also producing wins for the Golden Eagles was Domagoj Anic, who defeated David Galic of Baylor, 6-3, 6-3, and later went on to defeat TCU's Caleb Bulls, 6-2, 6-2. Anic is scheduled to meet Brett Joelson from Texas A&M at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Strate Krestski lost to Clemson's Kevin Fleck, 6-4, 6-2, while also being defeated in the consolation bracket by UTSA's Adam Becker, 6-7, 7-6, 10-6. Also making an appearance in the consolation bracket was Oskar Machuca, after being defeated by Clemson's Gera Boryachinskiy, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6. In consolation play, Machuca lost to Dennis Polyakov from Rice, 6-2, 6-4.
The Golden Eagles' doubles play proved to be at best on Friday.
The Machuca brothers paired up for a victory over Prairie View A&M's Bateman and Scurry, 8-2, while Anic and Krestski recorded a win against UTSA's Becker and Maric, 8-5.
