Southern Miss Begins Four-Game Road Swing

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Lady Eagles basketball team begins a four-game road swing over the next two weeks, when the league-leading Lady Eagles travel to UCF for Conference USA action on Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m., central.
The game will be broadcast over WXHB-FM 96.5 with the "Voice of the Lady Eagles" Jason Baker providing play-by-play action with former coach Kay James as the color analyst. The broadcast also is available on SouthernMiss.com.
Southern Miss (10-8, 4-1) is tied for first, following a 72-54 win over UAB last Sunday. Sophomores Amber Eugene and Kendra Reed scored a game-high 23 points each and Lauren Pittman added 14 points. Liz Biland hauled in a team-high nine rebounds and Kristin Chaney finished the game with eight assists.
Eugene continues to lead team in scoring at 17.4 points per game. Reed is second on the team at 16.6 points and Emer Foley is averaging 15.7 points per game. Foley also leads the team in rebounding at 7.9 boards per game, while Chaney leads the team in assists (117) and steals (41).
As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 65.6 points and 37.7 rebounds per game, while shooting 41.5 percent from the field and 74.6 percent from the line. The Lady Eagles are shooting 33.8 percent from three-point range. Reed leads the team with 43.
UCF (6-12, 1-4) is fresh off a 77-62 win over Memphis, snapping a four-game losing streak. Five players scored in double-figures, led by Keunta Miles with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Francine Houston also scored 20 points. Miles and Houston lead the team in scoring, both averaging 12.7 points per game. Miles also leads the team in rebounding at 6.4 boards per game.
Head Coach Gail Striegler is in her eighth season at UCF and owns a record of 104-118.
Following the UCF game, Southern Miss plays at Tulane on Friday, Jan. 26, before heading onto UTEP on Sunday, Jan. 28.
SOMTHING ABOUT UCF
UCF snapped a four-game losing streak, defeating Memphis in a 77-62 victory. The Golden Knights are 6-12 and 1-4 in the league. UCF started the season posting a 1-8 before winning four-straight. UCF has only two players averaging in double figures, Keunta Miles and Francine Houston, averaging 12.7 points per game each. Miles leads the team with 6.4 rebounds per game. As a team, UCF is averaging 57.4 points and 37.7 rebounds per game, while shooting 37.5 percent from the field and 58.6 percent from the line. Houston has connected on 41 of the team's 67 three-pointers.
ABOUT THE SERIES
This is ninth meeting between the two teams. Southern Miss leads the series, 8-0. The teams played five times before UCF joined Conference USA. The first meeting was played in 1980 in Orlando
