Joel Myrick Wins Adams Cup of Newport Title

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior golfer Joel Myrick (Hattiesburg, Miss.) fired a final-round, one-over par 73 Wednesday to win the Adams Cup of Newport Cleveland Golf Classic being played at the Newport National Golf Course in Newport, R.I.
Myrick, who finished the tournament with a three-under par 213, defeated Tyler Hitchcock of USF by one stroke and three others in the field by two strokes to capture his first individual medalist honor of his Golden Eagle career and first for Southern Miss since Danny Dennis won the Fairway Club Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., Sept. 13-14, 2004.
The Golden Eagles shot a 307 as a team in the final round to end the 54-hole event at 911 strokes and a ninth-place tie. USF won the team title with a plus-30, 894, after shooting a 301 in the final round. The Bulls defeated host Rhode Island (final round of 303) and Hartford (294), which finished one stroke back at 895 and Florida Gulf Coast (301), which tallied an overall stroke total of 898.
After FGCU, Georgetown (307) came in fifth at 906, followed by Texas-San Antonio (313) at 907, Pacific (306) at 908, North Texas (314) at 909, Marshall (313) and Southern Miss at 911, Furman (308) at 914 and Yale (308) at 926.
Myrick, who has averaged 74.3 strokes per round over his first six this fall, was followed in the individual event by Golden Eagle junior Kyle Ramey (Paducah, Ky), who finished tied for 37th, by posting a final-round 79 for a 232 total.
Redshirt freshman Paul Apyan (Chattanooga, Tenn.) then came in tied for 49th with a final-round 83 to end the event at 236, while freshman Frederick Janneck (Madison, Miss.) collected a 77 in his final circuit to tally a 240 overall total and a 57th-place tie and freshman Wesley Carter (Birmingham, Ala.) shot an 82 for a 242 total and a 61st place showing.
The Golden Eagles return to action again Oct. 2-3 at the The Tiger Invitational, hosted by the University of Memphis and being played at Colonial Country Club South course.
