HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Jerry Weeks era begins Monday for the Southern Miss men's golf program when they open the fall season at the Scenic City Invitational in Ooltewah, Tenn. The tournament is being hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Weeks, who was hired last month as the team's head coach after spending the previous 25 years as Director of Golf at the Hattiesburg Country Club, oversees a 10-player roster in his opening season.
The Golden Eagles return four players who saw action last season including senior Joel Myrick (Hattiesburg, Miss.), junior Austin Bowen (Hattiesburg, Miss.), junior Kyle Ramey (Paducah, Ky,) and sophomore Rocky Cleland (Hattiesburg, Miss.). Freshman Paul Apyan, who hails from Chattanooga, Tenn., returns as well, after red-shirting during the 2005-06 campaign.
The newcomers include freshmen Wesley Carter (Birmingham, Ala.), Robert Hudson (Fayetteville, Ark.), Frederick Janneck (Madison, Miss.), Alexander Park (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Tyler Sparks (Belmont, Miss.).
The Golden Eagles have a stiff challenge ahead of them in their opening tournament as the 54-hole, two-day event will be played at the par-72 Honors Course. The course is described a natural links-style course that has very demanding holes that require accurate shot placements. The greens are described as being fast and vary in size and undulation.
Southern Miss will play two rounds of golf on Monday and finish the event with 18 holes Tuesday.
