Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Tyler Conn, a 6-2, 195-pound left-handed pitcher from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to a national letter of intent and grant in aid for the 2006-07 academic year.
"I'm excited that Tyler has decided to attend Southern Miss and join our baseball program," Palmer said. "He throws three pitches for strikes, an 85-87 mph fastball, an above average change-up and a breaking ball that has improved over the past year. It gives us another solid left-handed pitcher to help fill one of our needs. He was one of the best pitchers on the Gulf Coast Community College pitching staff this past season. I look for him to come in and contribute right away."
This marks the sixth signee of the spring signing period and 11th signee overall for the Southern Miss baseball program.
Conn, a graduate of Ocean Springs High School, saw action in 15 games for Gulf Coast in 2006 as a starter and a relief pitcher, striking out 71 batters in 67 innings of work. In four games during the 2006 campaign, he struck out at least nine batters. He finished the season with a 4.92 ERA.
Southern Miss' other signees include J.R. Ballinger (RHP, 6-1, 180, East Central High School, Moss Point, Miss.), Houston Brown (LHP, 6-0, 180, Evangelical Christian HS/Memphis, Tenn.), Jared Cavanaugh (RHP, 6-2, 155, Newton County High School, Meridian, Miss.), Collin Cargill (RHP, 6-2, 195, Hattiesburg High School, Hattiesburg, Miss.), Adam Doleac (1B, 6-3, 195, Presbyterian Christian School, Hattiesburg, Miss.), Tim Foster (1B/3B, 6-3, 200, Adams County Christian, Natchez, Miss.), Garrett Harris (RHP, 6-0, 175, New Hope HS, Columbus, Miss.), Chance Harst (C, 5-11, 185, St. Thomas More HS, Lafayette, La.); Jordan King (3B/RHP, 6-0, 180, NW Rankin HS, Brandon, Miss.) and Todd McInnis (RHP, 6-1, 160, NW Rankin HS, Brandon, Miss.).
Southern Miss finished 39-23 in 2006 and made a school-record fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles return five position starters, two starting pitchers with more than five starts and 16 letterwinners to the team next season.
