Best and Maddox Named To ABCA All-South Region Team

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss' Daniel Best and Marc Maddox were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association's All-South Region team, as announced by the organization, today.
There are 26 spots all together between the first and second teams, and all but five of the selections were from SEC teams. The non-SEC selections were the two from Southern Miss, Tom King, Troy (second team SS), Brandon Hynick, Birmingham Southern (second team DH) and Sean Morgan, Tulane (second team starting pitcher).
Best, a first-team selection to the all-region team, was named a second-team All-Conference USA selection. He finished with a 6-2 record with 13 saves and a 2.22 ERA in 52.2 innings pitched. He struck out 50, walked 11 and opponents hit .227 against him. Best tied the school single-season save record and set the career save record with 25. He was drafted as the first pick of the 14th round by the Kansas City Royals.
Maddox, a second-team selection to the all-region team, was named a first-team All-Conference USA honorees as well as being named a first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. He hit .313 with seven doubles, two triples, 18 home runs and 70 RBIs. Maddox scored 61 runs, walked 32 times and stole a team-high 14 bases. He was drafted as the first pick of the ninth round by the Kansas City Royals.
Southern Miss finished 39-23 in 2006 and made a school-record fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles return five position starters, two starting pitchers with more than five starts and 16 letterwinners to the team next season.
