HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Men's Golf Coach Steve Johnson has announced the signing of Alexander Park of Ithaca, N.Y., to a national letter of intent for the 2006-07 academic year. This marks the second signee of the spring period for the men's golf program, and fourth overall.
Park is a standout golfer for Coach John Kotmel at Lansing (N.Y.) High School. He has had an outstanding prep career, helping lead the Lansing Bobcats to a perfect season in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference Division III this year. Last season, Park finished fourth overall in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Boys Golf Championship, while leading his Section IV team to the overall title. He also is a three-time all-state selection.
"We're very excited about having Alex join our Southern Miss family," Johnson said. "He has a solid game and has played in some big tournaments throughout his career. He's a very disciplined player who is committed to his priorities, and he will be a good fit for our program."
Park also has competed in numerous junior and amateur tournaments on the state and regional level throughout his career. He has posted 12 Top 10 finishes and nine Top 5 finishes, including winning the Westfield PGA Junior Section Championship in New York last year. In 2004, Park won the New York State Junior Amateur Championship and a was a semi-finalist in the same event in 2005.
Park becomes the fourth Southern Miss men's golf signee overall and second of the spring. The group includes Wesley Carter of Birmingham, Ala., and Freddie Janneck of Madison, Miss., who both signed in the early signing period last November. Rob Hudson of Fayetteville, Ark., signed at the start of the spring period last month.
