The Southern Miss softball team dropped a pair of 4-0 contests to Memphis today, at Greenbrook Park in Southaven, Miss.
With the losses, Southern Miss falls to 21-26 overall, 7-4 in Conference USA. Memphis improves to 20-17, 5-5.
In game one, Southern Miss threatened in the first, as Charity Butler was hit by a pitch, but was left stranded at third.
The game was a pitcher's duel until the fifth, when Memphis took a 1-0 lead on a RBI single by Lindsey Pridgen, scoring Tori Gross, who doubled with one out.
The Tigers put the game out of reach in the sixth, as Kimberly Hayden had a bases-loaded RBI sacrifice fly to right, before Gross had a two-RBI double to make the final score.
Jenna Kubesch (8-5) got the win for Memphis, as she no-hit the Lady Eagles, walking one and striking out five.
Lacey Gros (11-11) took the loss for Southern Miss, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs, all earned, walking one and striking out six. Samantha Davis got the final out.
In game two, Southern Miss loaded the bases with two outs, but did not get any runs across.
Memphis took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as Bridgette McNulty reached on a error off Jennifer Fox's glove in shallow centerfield, advancing to third on the play, which scored Leila Dolfo, on base with a one-out walk. Hayden then singled to right, scoring McNulty.
Southern Miss threatened again in the second, but left two runners stranded.
Memphis added a run in the second, on a solo home run by Pridgen, making the score 3-0.
The Lady Tigers got their final run in the third, on a RBI single by McNulty.
Niki Johnson (9-7) got the win for Memphis, allowing four hits, while walking five and striking out four.
Danielle Wymer (5-5) took the loss, allowing seven hits and four runs, two earned, walking four and striking out five.
Melissa Prouty finished with two hits to lead Southern Miss in game two.
The series finale is set for 1 p.m., on Sunday.
