Softball Falls In Another Heartbreaker, 4-3 In 11 Innings

East Carolina-Southern Miss Game Three Box
The Southern Miss softball team dropped its third consecutive heartbreaker to East Carolina today, falling 4-3 in 11 innings.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 26-33, 10-11, while East Carolina improves to 36-23, 10-11.
Southern Miss took a 2-0 lead in the first. Charity Butler opened the frame with her second home run of the season, as the Lady Eagles took a 1-0 lead. With one out, Jessica Huerta singled down the left field line, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Jennifer Fox then followed with a RBI single up the middle, scoring Huerta to make the score 2-0.
East Carolina tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second, on a two-run home run by Beth Nolan.
The Lady Pirates took a 3-2 lead in the third. With two outs, Krista Jessup singled, stole second, before scoring on a RBI single by Jessica Johnson.
Southern Miss tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth. With two outs, Melissa Prouty and Butler singled back-to-back and Ashley Brenan was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Following a East Carolina pitching change to Keli Harrell, Jessica Huerta then walked, scoring Prouty to tie the game.
East Carolina won the game in the 11th. With one out, Alison Monce doubled advancing to second on an infield single by Ashley Quick. After Vanessa Moreno walked, a RBI single into left by Erin St. Ledger won the game for the Lady Pirates.
Keli Harrell (22-14) got the win, working the final 6.1 innings, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out five.
Lacey Gros (14-16) took the loss, lasting 10.1 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs, walking eight and striking out six.
Southern Miss returns to action on Wednesday, May 3, with a 6:30 p.m., game at nationally ranked Alabama. The Lady Eagles conclude their regular-season at home next weekend against Tulsa.
