The Southern Miss softball team dropped a hard fought 5-1 decision to No. 4 Alabama tonight.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 26-34, while Alabama improves to 45-8.
The game was a pitcher's duel early and was scoreless until the fifth.
In that frame, Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead. Allison Bullard reached on a fielding error by Kelly Montalvo, who missed first base on a ball grounded to Crimson Tide starter Blair Potter. Bullard went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kristin Pilgrim and then to third on a foul out to first by Nicole Chisolm. Bullard then scored on a RBI infield single by Melissa Prouty.
But Alabama got three runs in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Jordan Praytor and Staci Ramsey were hit by a pitch back-to-back, scoring pinch runner Mallory Benak and Staci Ramsey. The Crimson Tide got their final run on a RBI groundout by Stephaie Van Brakle, which scored Mandy Burford.
Alabama added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by Dominique Accetturo.
Southern Miss threatened in threatened in the bottom of the seventh, placing two runners on base and loading the bases for a moment on a single to right by Prouty, but Chisolm was thrown out at second on the play to end the game.
Potter (4-0) got the win for Alabama, tossing 6.2 innings, allowing three hits and one run, walking one and striking out five.
Samantha Davis (3-5) took the loss, working 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and three runs, walking none and striking out three, which matched her career-high.
Prouty finished with two hits and a RBI to lead Southern Miss.
Southern Miss closes out the regular-season this weekend, hosting Tulsa in a three game series, while also looking to secure a berth in next week's Conference USA Tournament in Tulsa, Okla. Game times are 1 and 3 p.m., on Saturday, also former softball letterwinners appreciation day. The series finale, also senior day for five Lady Eagles, Danielle Wymer, Charity Butler, Ashley Brenan, Ashley Davis and Jessica Huerta, set for 1 p.m., on Sunday.
