Softball Falls In Series Finale To Houston, 5-3

Houston-Southern Miss Game Three Box Score
The Southern Miss softball team made a late seventh inning rally against Houston in the series finale today, but came up short, 5-3.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 25-30 overall, 10-8 in Conference USA. Houston improves to 31-18, 12-6.
Southern Miss took a 1-0 advantage in the first, on a one-out, solo home run by Ashley Brenan, her sixth of the year. With the home run, Brenan now has 18 in her career, as that home run moved her into a tie for fourth all-time with Jennifer Ford.
Houston took a 3-1 lead in the third. Jaci Gonzalez doubled off the right field wall to open the frame, went to third on a groundout by Jessica Valis, before scoring on a two-out RBI single by Elaina Nordstrom. Christa Raley then followed with a two-run home run, to make the score 3-1.
The Cougars made the score 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, on a bases loaded two-RBI single by Raley.
Southern Miss loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, as a RBI single by Jessica Huerta scored Melissa Prouty, who reached on a error by Valis. Jennifer Fox reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Charity Butler, as she was safe on a throwing error by Cougar third baseman Laura Durham. But Cougar pitcher Angel Shamblin got the final two outs, to preserve the victory.
Shamblin (13-6) got the win, allowing seven hits and three runs, one earned, walking three and striking out six.
Lacey Gros (14-14) took the loss for Southern Miss, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and five runs, walking two and striking out thee. Samantha Davis pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing two hits.
Brenan finished with two hits to lead Southern Miss.
Southern Miss returns to action on Tuesday, April 25, in a 5 p.m., contest at Jackson State.
