Southern Miss-Houston Game One Box Score
Southern Miss-Houston Game Two Box Score
The Southern Miss softball team dropped a pair of heartbreaking games to Houston today, 1-0 in game one and 3-2 in nine innings in game two.
With the losses, Southern Miss falls to 25-29 overall, 10-7 in Conference USA. Houston improves to 30-18, 11-6.
Game one saw a pitcher's duel between Southern Miss' Lacey Gros and Houston's Angel Shamblin.
In the first, the Lady Eagles left Jessica Huerta stranded at second base, after she walked with two outs, and stole second.
The Cougars left two runners stranded in the bottom of the first.
Southern Miss again threatened in the second, as Ashley Davis tied the school's all-time hits record of 185 with a leadoff single and Allison Bullard then reached on a error by Cougar second baseman Jaci Gonzalez. Then with two outs, Davis and Bullard went to third and second respectively on a pass ball, before being stranded there.
Houston got the lone run of the game in the fifth, as with the bases loaded, Christa Raley drew a RBI walk, scoring Brandi Clark, which proved to be the game-winning run.
Shamblin (12-6) got the win, pitching seven innings, allowing two hits, walking three and striking out 12.
Gros (14-13) took the loss, allowing two hits and one run, walking six and striking out two.
In game two, Southern Miss took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, on a two-run home run to right field by Charity Butler, her first of the season and second of her career.
Houston tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, a Raley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Jessica Valis, before Laura Durham also walked with the bases loaded, to knot the game at 2-2.
Then in the ninth, Houston got a one-out triple by Gonzalez, before she scored on a RBI sacrifice fly to left by Valis. Southern Miss thought Gonzalez would be doubled off at third base, as Jennifer Fox caught the fly ball by Valis, but the throw back to third didn't matter, as the umpires ruled that Gonzalez had properly tagged up, which netted the game-winning run.
Carla Kennimer (7-1) got the win, allowing two hits and two runs, walking four and striking out seven.
Danielle Wymer (6-6) took the loss, pitching 8.2 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, walking three.
The series finale between the two teams is set for 1 p.m., on Sunday.
