HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Golden Eagle tennis team swept the doubles and singles matches en route to their first shut out of the season, defeating Nicholls State 7-0 Friday afternoon at the Hattiesburg Racquet Club.
The match featured only two doubles matches and five singles matches due to Nicholls State playing only five players.
Southern Miss improved to 6-12 (1-2 C-USA) with the win, while Nicholls State fell to 4-12 on the spring season.
"I was happy with how we played in doubles, and in singles, Marc, Domagoj and Reid played well at No. 1, 2 and 3," Head Coach Teddy Viator said. "We're now looking forward to playing nationally ranked (No. 38) Louisiana-Lafayette tomorrow."
With an automatic victory already in hand for the Golden Eagles at No. 3 doubles due to Nicholls State's lack of players, Southern Miss took both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to claim the doubles point. Domagoj Anic and Reid Bourgeois defeated Sebastien Normand and Vlad-Lucien Popa (NSU) at No. 1 doubles, 9-8, and Marc Lux and Dylan Mezey defeated Alexandru Silav and Denis Borisevich (NSU) at No. 2 doubles, 8-5. Juan Garzon and John Koti earned the automatic 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles.
Anic/Bourgeois improved to a team-best 7-4 doubles spring record with their win, while Lux/Mezey (4-1) and Garzon/Koti (1-0) also improved their records with their wins.
The Golden Eagles continued their winning streak into singles competition, sweeping all five positions. Lux defeated Normand (NSU) at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, and Anic defeated Popa (NSU) at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
Bourgeois defeated Borisevich (NSU) at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1, for his career record No. 68 singles win to tie David Jansson for the most singles wins in Southern Miss men's tennis history since 1988-1989.
Garzon defeated Silav (NSU) at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 7-6, and Mezey defeated Ricardo van Bolderick (NSU), 6-0, retired, at No. 5 singles. Poole received the automatic 6-0, 6-0, victory at No. 6 singles.
Lux (5-13), Anic (7-10), Bourgeois (7-9), Garzon (5-9), Mezey (6-12) and Poole (4-10) each improved their spring singles records with their wins.
Southern Miss returns to the court tomorrow, April 15 to host No. 38 Louisiana-Lafayette for the final match of the regular season. The match will begin at 1 p.m. at the Hattiesburg Racquet Club.
