Softball Splits Doubleheader With UAB

The Southern Miss softball team split a doubleheader with UAB tonight, falling 5-3 in game one, before winning game two, 11-7.
With the split, Southern Miss stands 23-27 overall, 9-5 in Conference USA, while UAB is 25-17, 11-6 on the year.
In game one, Southern Miss jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, on a RBI sacrifice bunt by Jessica Huerta, scoring Charity Butler, who singled to start the inning.
After UAB made the score 1-1 in the second on a RBI sacrifice fly to Kayla Harris, the Lady Eagles got the run back in the second.
With two outs, Nicole Chisolm doubled, went to third on a wild pitch, before scoring on a RBI infield single by Melissa Prouty, to take a 2-1 advantage.
Southern Miss made the score 3-1 in the fourth as an RBI single by Chisolm scored Allison Bullard, who walked with one out, before stealing second and third base.
But UAB tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth, on a RBI double by Holly Krzan and sacrifice fly by Andrea Rogers.
Then in the seventh, UAB got a two-out, two-run home run by Leigh Walker to provide the final margin, as the Blazers won for the first time in Hattiesburg.
Jennifer Nelson (12-7) got the win, allowing four hits and three runs, walking two and striking out 10.
Lacey Gros (12-12) took the loss, allowing eight hits, five runs, walking six and striking out four.
Chisolm led Southern Miss with two hits in game one, which matched a career-high.
In game two, Southern Miss again jumped out to an early lead, on the strength of a Jennifer Fox two-run home run to left, her team-leading seventh of the year.
After UAB tied the game at two in the second on a RBI single by Allison Davis and RBI sacrifice fly by Lindsay Stanley, Southern Miss answered with a big bottom inning.
With one out, Prouty walked, before Butler hit her team-leading 14th double of the year, moving her into a tie for the fourth-best single-season performance in that category, which advanced Prouty to third. Ashley Brenan then doubled, scoring both, before Brenan scored on a triple to right by Jessica Huerta, which moved her into a tie for second place all-time in that category. Then with two outs, Ashley Davis connected on a two-run home run to left field, as the Lady Eagles took a 7-2 lead.
Southern Miss made the score 8-2 in the third, as Prouty, on base with a walk, scored as Brenan reached on a fielding error by UAB pitcher Brittany Hodge.
UAB cut the Southern Miss lead to 8-6 in the fifth, as Nicole Whitlock singled up the middle to score Andrea Rogers, who led off the inning with a triple. Then with one out, Jacy Leon connected on a three-run home run to left.
But Southern Miss answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, getting RBI singles by Brenan and Fox, while Butler scored on a fielding error by UAB centerfielder McCall on a hard hit ball by Huerta.
UAB got its final run of the game in the seventh on a solo home run by Walker.
Danielle Wymer (6-5) got the win for Southern Miss, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing 11 hits, six runs, five earned, walking one and striking out one. Samantha Davis pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and one run, walking one and striking out three, which tied a career high.
Brenan and Fox each finished with three RBIs in game two, while Brenan and Prouty tied and set career highs respectively with three runs scored.
Harris (9-5) took the loss for UAB, lasting two innings, allowing six hits and seven runs, walking four and striking out one.
The series finale is set for 1 p.m., at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
