PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Golden Eagle tennis team fell to No. 4 West Florida (Div. II), 6-1, Tuesday afternoon at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
West Florida improved to 19-6 with the win, while Southern Miss fell to 5-12 (1-2 C-USA) with the loss.
"We played well in doubles today, but we should have won at No. 3, 4 and 5 singles to win the match," Head Coach Teddy Viator said. "We didn't close the match when we had it, and we lost some momentum at singles No. 2, 3 and 6. We were able to fight to get some momentum back, but we couldn't maintain it. They were a good team, though we were in a position to win, and should have beat them."
Southern Miss won two out of three doubles to gain the early 1-0 advantage. Domagoj Anic and Reid Bourgeois won their first match against a ranked doubles team, defeating the No. 6 ranked doubles duo of Eduardo Cavasotti and Alberto Torchia (WF) at No. 1 doubles, 8-5. Marc Lux and Dylan Mezey also won their doubles match to clinch the doubles point, defeating Luis Arboleda and Nicolas Barrientos (WF), 8-6, at No. 3 doubles. West Florida's only win in doubles came at No. 2 doubles, where Vivian Chettri and Diego Zorzi were victorious against Tommy Maestri and Andrew Poole, 8-6.
The doubles teams of Anic/Bourgeois (6-4) and Lux/Mezey (3-1) both improved their records with their wins, while the record of Maestri/Poole (1-3) dropped with their loss.
The Argonauts responded in singles by sweeping all six spots, though the Golden Eagles forced West Florida to three sets in three singles spots to earn their wins. No. 30 Torchia (WF) defeated Lux at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, Barrientos (WF) defeated Bourgeois at No. 4 singles, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, and Chettri (WF) defeated Mezey at No. 5 singles, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
In other singles action, No. 14 Zorzi (WF) defeated Anic at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-5, Casvasotti (WF) defeated Garzon at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2, and McGuigan (WF) defeated Koti at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
The records of Anic (6-10), Lux (4-13), Garzon (4-9), Bourgeois (6-9), Mezey (5-12) and Koti (3-6) each fell with their losses.
