Softball Takes Down Nationally Ranked Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team snapped a three-game losing streak tonight, as it defeated No. 24 Mississippi State 2-0 in Starkville.
With the win, Southern Miss improves to 13-15, while Mississippi State falls to 18-4. It was Southern Miss first victory over Mississippi State since defeating the Lady Bulldogs 7-2 on Feb. 16, 2002. The win also snapped a three-game losing streak to the Mississippi State.
Southern Miss threatened in the first inning, as with two outs, Jessica Huerta walked, before advancing to third on a single to right field by Ashley Davis. But Huerta was stranded at third, as Jennifer Fox struck out to end the inning.
The Lady Eagles got made the score 2-0 in the fifth, as Charity Butler tripled to left to start the inning, then scored on a throwing error by Bulldog third baseman Michelle Kinney, before Ashley Brenan scored on a wild pitch by Lady Bulldog starter Ragan Blake.
Krystal Crooks (1-1) got the win for Southern Miss, pitching four innings, allowing two hits, walking one and striking out one. Samantha Davis got her first career save, working the final three innings, allowing one hit, while striking out one.
Ragan Blake took the loss for Mississippi State, allowing six hits and two runs, both unearned, walking one and striking out eight.
Mississippi State never really threatened in the game, getting only three hits, while a runner never reached past second base.
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend, as Conference USA action begins. The Lady Eagles host Marshall in a double header on Saturday, with game times set for 1 and 3 p.m. The series finale is set for 12 p.m., on Sunday.
