HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior pitcher Cliff Russum has been named the Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week, marking the third-straight week a Golden Eagle was honored with a weekly honor.
Houston's Brad Lincoln was the other co-pitcher of the week after he opened Conference USA play with a complete-game shutout over Marshall on Friday night. He struck out eight and walked just two, marking his eighth straight start with seven or more K's. Lincoln allowed just three total hits and faced the minimum over the final six innings. Memphis freshman first baseman Adam Adar was named the hitter of the week.
Senior third baseman Marc Maddox was named Co-Hitter of the Week two weeks ago and senior closer Daniel Best was named Pitcher of the Week last week.
Russum, who held the Blazers to a .043 batting average for the game, had his best performance of the season so far, earning his fourth win of the season and first in Conference USA action. He carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before giving up his first hit with one-out in the seventh inning to Zac Ward, when he hit a grounder that glanced off of Russum's leg.
Before the hit, Russum retired 10-straight batters back to the fourth inning, when the first runner reached on a fielding error. He started the game with two-straight outs, before walking two batters and then getting the ground out to close out the inning. He retired the side in the second and third innings.
For the season, Russum is 4-2 with a 2.65 ERA in 37.1 innings pitched. He has given up 12 runs, 11 earned, on 29 hits, walked 18, struck out 26 and is holding opponents to a .210 batting average.
