Lady Eagle Basketball Team Takes On Marshall In Quarterfinals

DALLAS - - The Southern Miss entered the 2006 Conference USA Basketball Championship, seeded No. 4, and received a first-round bye, play Marshall in the quarterfinals on Friday at 3:30 p.m. These two teams played against each other only five days ago.
In earlier action, Marshall defeated Memphis, 80-73. The game will be broadcast over WXHB-FM 96.5 with the "Voice of the Lady Eagles" Jason Baker providing play-by-play action with former coach Kay James as the color analyst.
Southern Miss concluded its regular season with a 13-14 record overall and 10-6 in league play, following a 66-53 loss at Marshall on Feb. 26. In that game, Southern Miss fell behind early, following a 24.2 percent shooting performance in the first half. Marshall led by as many as 19 points early in the second half, when Southern Miss used an 11-1 run, cutting the lead to 10, 52-42, at the 5:12 mark. Southern Miss had an opportunity to get the lead into single digits, but failed to convert on a wide open layup. Kendra Reed recorded her second double-double of the season with a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds. Amber Eugene and Kristin Chaney combined for 13 of the 15 steals. Southern Miss finished the game shooting 25.0 percent from the field.
Reed continues to lead the team in scoring, averaging 15.9 points per game, followed by Ashley Boehnel, who is averaging 13.0 points. Ashley Harrell is next, averaging 10.7 points followed by Eugene at 10.6 points per game. Eugene also leads the team in rebounding at 6.8 rebounds per game. Heading into the tournament, Southern Miss is averaging 65.6 points and 35.4 rebounds per game as a team, while shooting 40.8 percent from the field and 74.1 from the line.
Marshall, under the direction of Coach Royce Chadwick, enters the game with a record of 15-13 overall, following an 80-72 win over Memphis in the first round of the tournament. In that game, Reshundra Smiley scored a career-high 30 points and Sikeetha Shepard-Hall had 23 points.
Shepard-Hall leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.3 points followed by Modupe Ishola at 10.9 points per game. Ishola also leads the team in rebounding at 7.5 rebounds per game. Shepard-Hall also leads the team in assists (72) and steals (41). As a team, Marshall is averaging 63.5 points and 40.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 41.3 percent from the field and 65.4 percent from the line.
The series with Marshall is tied 1-1, with each team winning at home during the regular season.

Saturday's semifinal games will be televised on CSTV. The C-USA Championship game on Sunday, March 5, will be broadcasted on ESPN2, beginning at 3 p.m. (CST).
