Softball Falls Twice To In-State Rival Ole Miss

The Lady Eagle softball team dropped a doubleheader to in-state rival Ole Miss tonight, 5-1 and 3-2, before 494 on a damp night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
With the defeats, Southern Miss falls to 15-18, while Ole Miss improves to 11-17.
In game one, Ole Miss took a 2-0 lead in the second, on a two-RBI double by Rebecca McIntire.
Southern Miss cut the lead in half, getting its lone run in the fourth, on a RBI single by Jessica Huerta, which scored Ashley Brenan, who singled with one out and stole second.
But the Lady Rebels put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh, on a three-run home run by Lauren Rowe, to make the final margin.
Dana Brill (5-5) got the win for Ole Miss, allowing three hits and one run, walking three and striking out seven.
Lacey Gros (9-9) took the loss, lasting 6.2 innings, allowing four hits and five runs, walking six and striking out eight.
In game two, Ole Miss took a 1-0 lead in the second, on a RBI single by Mary Jane Callahan.
The Lady Rebels made the score 3-0 in the third, thanks to a two-RBI triple by Vanessa Gibbs.
Southern Miss made the score 3-1 in the third, as with the bases loaded, Jennifer Fox's sacrifice fly to left field scored Charity Butler. But the Lady Eagles would leave two runners stranded, as Allison Bullard struck out swinging and Ashley Davis grounded out.
The Lady Eagles got closer in the bottom of the sixth, as an RBI single by Krystal Crooks scored pinch runner Courtney Kelly.
In the seventh, down to its last out, Southern Miss got a double to right by Fox, before she advanced to third on a single by Bullard. Bullard then stole second to potentially give Southern Miss a chance to win with a base hit, but Davis struck out swinging to end the game.
Callahan (5-10) got the win for Ole Miss, allowing five hits and two runs, walking three and striking out eight.
Krystal Crooks (1-2) took the loss, lasting 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, walking two and striking out three. Samantha Davis threw the final 4.1 innings, allowing only two hits, while walking one and striking out one.
Southern Miss takes the weekend off, before returning to action on Wednesday, March 22, hosting Nicholls State in a doubleheader set for 5 and 7 p.m.
