Softball Drops Series Finale To Marshall

Marshall-Southern Miss Game Three Box Score
The Southern Miss softball team dropped the series finale against Marshall today, 9-1, in six innings.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 15-16 overall, 2-1 in Conference USA, while Marshall improves to 12-11, 1-2 in league play.
Marshall got two runs in the first inning, thanks to a two run home run to left by Rachel Folden.
Southern Miss loaded the bases with no outs in the hits, as Allison Bullard and Kristin Pilgrim singled after Jennifer Fox was hit by a pitch to start the inning. But the Lady Eagles would not get runs across, as Fox was picked off third base, Courtney Kelly struck out swinging and Melissa Prouty flied out to right field.
Marshall made the score 5-0 in the third, as it loaded the bases with one out. Deanna Tourville then had an RBI groundout, scoring Jessica Williams, before Leah Wintter connected on a two-RBI single to right, to take the five-run margin.
The Thundering Herd added another run in the fifth, thanks to an RBI single by Whittner, which scored pinch runner Noelle Adams, who ran for Samantha Rodriguez, who walked with one out.
Southern Miss got its only run in the bottom of the fifth, as Charity Butler doubled with one out, before scoring on a double by Ashley Brenan. With two outs, Brenan went to third on a single by Ashley Davis, but was left stranded, as Jennifer Fox grounded out to end the inning.
Marshall got its final three runs in the sixth, on a three-run home run to right field by Folden.
Veronica Ralston (8-5) got the win for Marshall, lasting six innings, allowing one hit and one run, walking one and striking out two.
Danielle Wymer (4-4) took the loss, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and five runs, two earned, walking three and striking out three.
Brenan finished with two hits and an RBI today for Southern Miss. Folden had two hits and five RBIs to lead Marshall.
Southern Miss returns to action on Thursday, March 16, hosting in-state rival Ole Miss in a doubleheader set 5:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m., at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. The games can be heard on the Southern Miss ISP Sports Network by logging on to SouthernMiss.com.
