HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team won their second match in a row against Delta State, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
With the win, Southern Miss improves to 3-6, while Delta State falls to 1-4.
"Marc (Lux) and Andrew (Poole) had a big win in doubles that gave us our momentum going into singles," Head Coach Teddy Viator said. "I was proud of our players today as we beat a very good Delta State team without one of our starters (Juan Garzon) in the lineup."
With doubles tied at one win each, as the Golden Eagles won the first position at No. 2 doubles with Domagoj Anic and Reid Bourgeois' 8-2 victory over Justin Garnier and Julien Beckensteiner (DSU), and Delta State claiming the next win with Benjamin Plongenet and Rafael Weigard's (DSU) 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles, the doubles combo of Marc Lux and Andrew Poole took Thomas Pasquet and David Voravongsa (DSU) to the tiebreaker to claim the win and the doubles point victory for the Golden Eagles with a 9-8 (11-9) victory.
With their wins, Lux/Poole and Anic/Bourgeois each improved their spring doubles records to 3-0 and 2-0, respectively, while Koti/Mezey fell to 2-1 with their loss.
Southern Miss began singles action with two straight wins as Bourgeois led off with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Plongenet (DSU) at No. 5 singles, followed by Mezey's 6-1, 7-6 victory at No. 3 singles over Kirill Pervoun (DSU) before Delta State recorded their first win of the afternoon on Plongenet's (DSU) 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles against Koti.
The Golden Eagles got back on track at No. 2 singles with Anic's 7-5, 6-4 victory over Pasquet (DSU). The Statesmen added one more win on the day as Voravongsa (DSU) defeated Lux at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-4. Poole was winning in his third set against Garnier (DSU) at No. 4 singles before the match was retired due to Garnier suffering an injury, giving Poole a 6-2, 3-6, 6-5 victory.
Anic (3-5), Bourgeois (3-4), Mezey (4-5) and Poole (3-5) each improved their singles record with their wins, while the records of Koti (1-4) and Lux (2-7) each fell with their losses.
Southern Miss next travels to Troy, Ala. on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against Troy.
