Golden Eagle Tennis Team Downs Southern, 6-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team swept doubles and won five out of six singles to claim a 6-1 victory over Southern this afternoon at the Hattiesburg Racquet Club.
With the win, Southern Miss improves to 2-6 while Southern drops to 0-6.
"I thought we played well, and this win should give us some confidence going into this weekend's matches," Head Coach Teddy Viator said. "We started off playing well with doubles, and Domagoj had a very good win today."
Southern Miss swept all three spots in doubles to earn the doubles point.
The duo of John Koti and Dylan Mezey started doubles play off with an 8-0 shutout of Elvis Espinal and Justin Worthy (SU), the tandem of Domagoj Anic and Reid Bourgeois guaranteed the win with their 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles over Marlon Gichie and Paul DeRousselle (SU) and the combination of Marc Lux and Andrew Poole completed the sweep with their 8-4 victory over Bino Rasedisa and Christopher Williams (SU) at No. 1 doubles.
Doubles partners Lux/Poole (2-0), Anic/Bourgeois (1-0) and Koti/Mezey (2-0) all improved their doubles records with their wins.
The Golden Eagles won five out of six spots in singles action.
Lux gained the first singles win of the day with his 6-1, 6-1 victory over Worthy (SU) at No. 2 singles, Mezey continued Southern Miss' winning ways with his 6-3, 6-1 victory over Rasedisa (SU) at No. 3 singles, Poole clinched the win for the team with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Espinal (SU) at No. 5 singles and Bourgeois hit clean-up at No. 4 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 over Williams (SU).
Two matches came down to the third set, as Southern claimed their only win on DeRouselle's (SU) 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) victory over Koti at No. 6 singles, but Southern Miss would end the match on a winning note as Anic battled back to defeat Gichie (SU), 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (12-10), at No. 1 singles in the final match of the afternoon.
Mezey leads the team in singles wins on the spring season with a 3-5 record, followed by Bourgeois (2-4), Anic (2-5), Poole (2-5), Lux (2-6), Koti (1-3), Juan Garzon (1-5) and Tommy Maestri (0-2).
Southern Miss returns to the court on Saturday, March 10 at 2 p.m. against Delta State at the Hattiesburg Country Club and faces off against Troy on Sunday, March 11 at 1 p.m. in Troy, Alabama.
