The Lady Eagle softball team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 20 Auburn tonight, in a game played in senior second baseman Charity Butler's hometown.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 10-11, while Auburn improves to 12-3.
Southern Miss jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. With one out, Ashley Brenan walked, stole second, went to third on a groundout by Jessica Huerta, before scoring on a RBI double to right field by Ashley Davis. With that double, Davis moved into second place all-time in doubles, with 35.
Auburn answered the Lady Eagles' opening run in the bottom of the inning, as an RBI single by Tatiana Fernandez plated Kristina McCain, who led off the inning with a single up the middle.
The Lady Tigers put three runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth, as Robin Martin and Lauren Walton singled back-to-back. Lady Eagle starter Lacey Gros retired the next two, before Holly Currie walked. Fernandez then tripled, clearing the bases, which gave Auburn a 4-1 lead.
Southern Miss threatened in the top of the seventh, with runners at the corners with one out, but pinch hitter Nicole Fontenot struck out and Melissa Prouty grounded out to end the game.
Beth DePietro (5-1) got the win for Auburn, allowing five hits and one run, walking two and striking out six.
Lacey Gros (6-6) took the loss for Southern Miss, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs, walking four and striking out one. Freshman Samantha Davis made her career debut tonight, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing one hit.
Southern Miss now travels to Gainesville, Fla., on Thursday, to begin play in the University of Florida hosted Gator Invitational on Friday. The Lady Eagles face Seton Hall and Central Michigan at 11 a.m., and 1:15 p.m., on Friday, before facing Central Michigan and Florida at 10 a.m., and 12:15 p.m., on Saturday. Southern Miss closes its tournament play on Sunday, facing Seton Hall and Florida at 9 a.m., and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
