IRVING, Texas -- - Southern Miss' Kendra Reed was among the Conference USA award winners announced by the league today in Dallas, site of the 2006 C-USA Women's Basketball Championship. Reed received Co-Freshman of the Year honors with East Carolina's Jasmine Young.
It has been 16 years since a Southern Miss player won this award (Janice Felder, Metro Conference Freshman of the Year in 1990-91). Reed has scored 20 or more points on 10 occasions, ranking fifth in the league with a 15.9 scoring average. She also places fifth in the conference in free throw shooting, hitting at a .863 clip from the charity stripe.
Reed also received Second Team All-Conference USA as well as being named to the All-Freshman team. For the third consecutive season, a Southern Miss player received All-Freshman honors. Last season Shannon Stueber was named to the all-freshman team and 2003-04 Deondra Carter received that honor. The last time a Southern Miss player received All-Conference honors was in the 1999-2000 season, Angela Atterberry was named second team all-conference.
Tulsa head coach Charlene Thomas-Swinson and Golden Hurricane junior forward Jillian Robbins were named the Coach and Player of the Year for the league. Robbins also took home Defensive Player of the Year honors. It marks the second straight season that a player has earned both of those awards (TCU's Sandora Irvin).
Conference USA award winners were selected by a panel including the league's head coaches, sports information directors and media representatives.
