Softball Falls Twice In Hawaii Paradise Classic

The Southern Miss Lady Eagle softball team dropped a pair of games today, as it opened its 2006 season in the Hawaii Paradise Classic in Honolulu.
The Lady Eagles fell 5-4 in the first game of the tournament to No. 25 BYU, and dropped a 9-0 decision to Texas State in game three. The Lady Bobcats no-hit Southern Miss in game three.
With the losses, Southern Miss begins its season 0-2.
Against BYU, Jessica Huerta led off the first inning with a single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Ashley Brenan. But Jennifer Fox then popped into a double play to end the inning.
BYU loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but did not score.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, thanks to a RBI single by Monica Gonzales, which scored Jennifer Whiteley, who walked with one out.
BYU added a single run in the fourth, on a solo home run by Tracee Hoch, to take a 2-0 lead.
Southern Miss got its first run in the fifth. With one out, Kristin Pilgrim singled to left and went to second on a groundout by Melissa Prouty. But a throwing error by Cougar first baseman Laneta Lei, which traveled all the way to the left field fence, allowed Pilgrim to score, to make the score 2-1.
BYU added a single run in the fifth, on a RBI single by Jodi Norton and made the score 5-1 in the sixth, thanks to a two-run home run by Lei.
The Lady Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, as Fox, Ashley Davis and Charity Butler each singled, as Fox scored on a throwing error by Cougar right fielder Lindi Kennedy. Pilgrim then flew out to center, allowing Davis to score. Butler then advanced to third on a wild pitch by Cougar starting pitcher Sumer Tobias, and scored on a double down the left field line by pinch hitter Krystal Crooks, making the score 5-4. With pinch runner Courtney Kelly at second, Tobias got Bullard to strike out, ending the game.
Tobias (1-0) got the win, allowing six hits, four runs, three earned, while striking out six.
Lacey Gros (0-1) took the loss, allowing six hits and five runs, while striking out eight.
Against Texas State, pitcher Katie Ann Trahan pitched a no-hitter, striking out seven, while walking two, the Lady Bobcats defeated the Lady Eagles 9-0.
Texas State scored single runs in the first three innings, and added three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, to claim the victory.
Danielle Wymer (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven hits, six runs, four earned, walking five and striking out three.
Southern Miss returns to action on Friday, playing Texas Arlington at 6 p.m., central time and tournament host Hawaii at 10 p.m., central time.
