The Southern Miss Lady Eagle softball team concluded its play in the Hawaii Paradise Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii today, dropping a 6-1 decision to Texas Arlington.
With the loss, Southern Miss now starts its season 0-6.
Texas Arlington got two runs in the bottom of the first, thanks to a two-run home run by Jenna Fortune.
The Mavericks made the score 3-0 in the third, as three straight singles loaded the bases with one out.Fortune then connected on a RBI single, which scored Amanda Swofford. But Lady Eagle starter Lacey Gros got the final two outs of the inning, as Texas Arlington left the bases loaded.
Southern Miss got its only run in the fifth, as an RBI single by Allion Bullard scored Charity Butler, who led off the inning with a single. The Lady Eagles had runners and second and third, but did not score any additional runs.
The Mavericks put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth, as April Cloughtery had an RBI single and Katie Jones connected on a two-RBI single.
Jill Garro (1-2) got the win for Texas Arlington, pitching seven innings, allowing three hits and one run, walking one and striking out seven.
Gros (0-3) took the loss, allowing five hits and three runs, one earned, while striking out four.
Southern Miss returns to action on Feb. 15 in its home opener, hosting Jackson State in a 6 p.m., contest at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
