The Southern Miss softball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Loyola-Marymount tonight, as the team continues play in the Hawaii Paradise Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 0-5 on the season.
Loyola-Marymount made the score 1-0 in the third. Kirsten Whitt was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kirsten Slouber. Whitt then went to third on a passed ball and scored on a balk by Lady Eagle starter Danielle Wymer.
In the fourth, Southern Miss tied the game at 1-1. Jessica Huerta walked to begin the inning, and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Brenan. Huerta then stole third and scored on a throwing error by catcher Chelsie Tysdal, who threw the ball into left field.
The Lions then made the score 2-1 in the sixth, as Darci Pagnini connected on a RBI single, which scored Hillaree Bennett, who started the inning with a walk.
Southern Miss had a golden opportunity in the sixth, as the team loaded the bases. With one out, Allison Bullard was hit by a pitch, but as she attempted to steal second, Huerta was called out at the plate on batter's interference. Brenan then followed with a single to left, advancing Bullard to second. Jennifer Fox then walked to load the bases, but Ashley Davis struck out to end the inning.
In the seventh, Wymer retired the first two Loyola-Marymount hitters, but then walked the bases loaded. Tracey Cook then connected on a two-RBI single, giving the Lions a 4-1 lead.
Southern Miss got a hit in the bottom of the seventh, but did not score any runs.
Tiffany Pagano (2-1) got the win for Loyola-Marymount, allowing four hits and one run, walking two and striking out six.
Wymer (0-2) took the loss, allowing five hits, four runs, walking six and striking out one.
Southern Miss returns to action at 1 p.m., central time, facing Texas Arlington in bracket play action. Should Southern Miss win that game, it will face Hawaii at 3 p.m. central time. If Southern Miss wins that game, it will face the winner of the Loyola-Marymount-Texas State game in the Hawaii Paradise Classic Championship Game at 7 p.m., central time.
