Men's Tennis Loses To UC Riverside, 6-1

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team lost their second straight match at the UNLV Invitational, dropping a 6-1 decision to UC Riverside at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas on Saturday.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 0-4 on the dual season, while UC Riverside improved to 3-2.
In doubles play, the combination of Domagoj Anic and Dylan Mezey got things started with an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles over Joe Cartledge and Norman Tam (UCR). The Golden Eagles would stumble at the other doubles positions however, with No. 1 doubles partners Juan Garzon and Marc Lux losing to Mark Conteras and Christian Frick (UCR), 8-6, and Reid Bourgeois and Andrew Poole losing to Bobby Tam and Justin Montgomery (UCR), 8-6, giving UC Riverside the doubles point.
Anic/Mezey's win improves their dual record to 1-2 on the season, while Garzon/Lux fall to 0-3 and Bourgeois/Poole also drop to 0-3 on the young spring season.
In singles action, No. 4 singles Bourgeois earned his second singles victory of the dual season, defeating Cartledge (UCR) in three sets, 5-7, 6-0, 6-3, posting the team's only victory in singles. He now improves to tie for the singles team-best dual record of 2-2.
At No. 1 singles, Tam (UCR) defeated Lux, 6-1, 6-3, dropping Lux' singles record to 0-4.
Garzon played a close match with Contreras (UCR) at No. 2 singles heading into the third set of their match, but would retire in that third set, losing 7-5, 1-6, 3-1. For the spring, Garzon falls to 0-4.
At. No. 3 singles, Montgomery (UCR) defeated Anic, 6-3, 6-4, dropping Anic's dual singles record to 1-3.
Bobby Tam (UCR) won against Mezey, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles. For the spring season, Mezey is 2-2.
Frick (UCR) sealed the victory for UC Riverside, defeating Poole, 7-5, 7-5. With the loss, Poole drops to 0-3 on the dual season.
Southern Miss will play their final match of the UNLV Invitational on Sun. Feb. 12 against New Mexico State in Las Vegas, Nev.
