HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- -
Sophomore Kendra Reed scored 25 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 5-of-9 from three-point range, in leading the Lady Eagles past the Houston Jaguars, 71-63, in an exhibition game Thursday evening.
Lauren Pittman had 13 points, while Amber Eugene added a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Kristin Chaney handed out 11 assists.
Umeka Webb led the Jaguars with 19 points, followed by Tamea Scales and KeKe Harris with 11 points apiece, while Felicia West chipped in 10 points.
"I thought we got off to a slow start," Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "About the 12 minute mark, I felt like we were in control. In the second half, we lost control in the first five or six minutes, but I have to credit Kristin Chaney who did a great job of taking control of the game again."
Southern Miss finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field, including 46.2 percent from three-point range.
The Lady Eagles led 44-30 at the half, but the Jaguars opened the second half with a 12-2 run over the first six minutes, cutting the lead to four, 46-42. From there, both teams traded baskets over the next three minutes before Southern Miss put together a 14-5 run over 5:14 to take a 64-51 lead.
Houston made one more run at Southern Miss using a 12-5 run to get within six points, 69-63, with 1:29 remaining. Reed made two free throws with 55 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Southern Miss opens Conference USA on Sunday against UCF. The game time is set for 2 p.m.
