Women's Basketball Team Entertains Centenary Before Christmas Break

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Southern Miss women's basketball team hosts Centenary on Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. The Lady Eagles will then take a few days off for the Christmas break before returning to host the Houston Jaguars in an exhibition and play their last non-conference game before beginning Conference USA play.
The game will be broadcast over WXHB-FM 96.5 with the "Voice of the Lady Eagles" Jason Baker providing play-by-play action with former coach Kay James as the color analyst.
Southern Miss (5-7) is coming off a 63-48 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the finals of the Islander Classic. Amber Eugene and Emer Foley led the team, scoring 19 and 17 points, respectively. Foley also pulled down 11 rebounds, posting her second double-double of the season. Both players were named to the all-tournament team.
Eugene leads the team in scoring at 17.4 points. Foley leads the team in rebounding at 8.0 rebounds and is second in scoring at 16.4 points and Kendra Reed is averaging 14.5 points per game.
As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 62.8 points and 38.9 rebounds per game while shooting 41.8 percent from the field and 73.1 percent from the line. The Lady Eagles are shooting 35.0 percent from three-point range. Reed leads the team with 22.
Centenary is 3-9 following an 84-70 win over Sam Houston State. Holli Wilkins and Cierra Bush scored 23 and 20 points, respectively. Jelena Aleksic added 14 points.
Head Coach Steve Curtis is in his first season at Centenary. The Ladies return three starters from last year's team that finished 3-24.
Following the Centenary game, Southern Miss will take off several days for the Christmas Holiday before returning to action on Dec. 28, in an exhibition game against the Houston Jaguars.
SOMETHING ABOUT CENTENARY f¤ Centenary brings a 3-9 record into today's game. The Ladies has won two of the last three games. Centenary snapped a 56-game road losing streak with an 84-70 win over Sam Houston State. Head Coach Steve Curtis is in his first season, returns only five letterwinners from last year's team that posted a 3-24 record. The Ladies are averaging 58.2 points and 35.6 points per game, while shooting 36.5 percent from the field and 68.5 percent from the line. Centenary have connected on 64 three-pointers and Holli Wilkins has made 26 of the threes. Wilkins leads the team at 13.8 points per game and Cierra Bush leads the team in rebounding at 5.3 boards per game.
ABOUT THE SERIES FIELD f¤ Southern Miss leads the series with Centenary, 2-0. The last time the two teams played was Dec. 21, 2003, in Shreveport. The Lady Eagles defeated Centenary, 74-54.
