Women's Basketball Team Plays In-state Rival Jackson State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Southern Miss women's basketball team travels to in-state rival Jackson State for a game at 7 p.m., in Athletic and Assembly Center. The game will be broadcast over WXHB-FM 96.5 with the "Voice of the Lady Eagles" Jason Baker providing play-by-play action with former coach Kay James as the color analyst.
Southern Miss (1-2) is coming off an 81-61 win over Jacksonville State, Nov. 17. Forward Emer Foley led Southern Miss with her first double-double of the season with a career-high 36 points and 21 rebounds. Kendra Reed scored 15 points, followed by Amber Eugene with 11 points and Liz Biland added 10.
Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis, beginning her third season at the helm, owns a 24-35 record at Southern Miss and is 253-192 overall.
Foley leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 25.3 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. Reed is averaging 14.0 points and Eugene 10.0.
As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 67.7 points and 48.3 rebounds per game while shooting 43.3 percent from the field and 74.5 percent from the line.
Jackson State (2-1) is coming off a 64-60 loss at McNeese State. Nyasha Chambwe led the team with a 16 points and Shelita Burns added 15.
Head Coach Denise Taylor is in her sixth season at Jackson State and returns eight letterwinners from last year's team that finished 17-14. Burns is the top returning scorer and is averaging 15.0 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.
As a team, the Tigers are averaging 66.0 points and 38.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 41.4 percent from the field and 68.3 percent from the line.
Following the Jackson State game, Southern Miss returns home to host its annual tournament, La Quinta Inn Lady Eagle Classic presented by WXXV Fox 25, Nov. 24-25. Southern Miss opens the Classic in a 5 p.m., game against Grambling State, followed by Louisiana Tech and Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m.

SOMETHING ABOUT JACKSON STATE Jackson State opened its regular season on the road with a 65-60 over Northwestern State. The Tigers are 21-1 after a 64-60 loss at McNeese State. The team is averaging 66.0 points and 38.3 rebounds per game. Head Coach Denise Taylor returns four starters from last year's team. Shelita Burns leads the team with a 15.0 per game average. The team is shooting 41.4 percent from the field, including 31.4 percent from three-point range and 68.3 percent from the line.
ABOUT THE SERIES This is the 24th meeting between the two teams. Southern Miss leads the series 13-10. The last time the two teams played was Dec. 9, 2005, in Hattiesburg when the Lady Eagles defeated Jackson State in overtime, 76-67.
