Volleyball Team Loses To UAB In Four, 3-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - Four UAB players recorded double-digit kills, in leading the Blazers to a 3-1 (39-37, 24-30, 19-30, 20-30) Conference USA win over Southern Miss Friday night in the Payne Center.
Southern Miss dropped to 15-16 overall and 6-9 in the league, while UAB improved to 22-9 and 9-6.
Freshman Angela Hlavaty led Southern Miss with 15 kills and Ashley Petrinec added nine, while Maia Ivanova led the team with 14 digs.
UAB's Ivana Bozic recorded a match-high 22 kills, followed by Fernanda Domingos with 14, Aleksandra Vujovic and Casey Dent added 11 kills apiece.
Game one featured 21 ties and 14 lead changes in what turned out to be a marathon game. Southern Miss fought off five game points in winning game one, 39-37. UAB also fought off four game points.
UAB fought back to tie the match at 1-1, following a 30-24 win in game two. The Blazers used an 11-5 run midway through the game in taking the lead for good.
After intermission, UAB scored six unanswered points on the service game of Domingo helping the Blazers to a 30-19 win.
Southern Miss jumped out to 9-1 lead early, but could not hold on as UAB used a 19-8 run on its way to a 30-20 win in game four.
Southern Miss remains at home, closing out the regular season on Sunday against Memphis. The match time is set for 12 p.m., in the Payne Center.
