Soccer Falls In Overtime To UAB, 1-0

The Southern Miss soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to UAB today, despite 14 saves in goal by Christina Duvall, the second most ever in school history.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 4-7-1 overall, 0-3 in Conference USA, while UAB improves to 5-6, 3-0.
"We fought very hard," Head Coach Gail Macklin said. "I thought the match was very even. We were a bit unlucky in the overtime. They got some pressure on us and caught us. I'm proud of my team and their effort. We keep fighting hard. If we keep playing like we did today, we're going to get the right result."
In the game's opening minutes, Carly Barkley had an opportunity to put the Lady Eagles ahead, but her shot at the 3:43 mark was saved by Julie McFarlane.
The Lady Eagles got another opportunity at the 22:36 mark, but Sarah McFadden's shot was saved by McFarlane.
The two teams played to a 0-0 halftime tie, with UAB holding a 7-6 edge in shots.
In opening 11 seconds of the second half, Southern Miss' Sarah Brennan broke free but her shot was saved by McFarlane.
The team saw another shot by Kim Turner again saved by McFarlane at the 48:01 mark, while McFarlane also stopped shots at the 50:17, 53:02 and 53:31 marks.
In the overtime session, UAB attacked in the first five minutes, before Sally Palmer netted the game-winning goal at the 101:23 mark off a rebound.
UAB finished with a 21-19 edge in shots. McFadden finished with five shots for Southern Miss, while Barkley added four. The 14 saves by Duvall were a career-high, and were the second most in school history, behind Bronagh Gallagher's 16 saves against Cincinnati on Oct. 17, 1999.
Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday, hosting Memphis in a 1 p.m., match.
