Sam Hall Intercollegiate Opens Monday for Men's Golf

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss men's golfer Paul Apyan (Chattanooga, Tenn.) shot a three-over-par 144 over the first two rounds to lead the Golden Eagles in the Sam Hall Intercollegiate here Monday, being played at Canebrake Country Club.
Apyan fired rounds of 71 and 74 at the par-71, 6,964-yard course to hold a tie for 21st place.
Sophomore Rocky Cleland (Hattiesburg, Miss.), playing as an individual and not part of the team scoring for Southern Miss, ranked tied for 12th after notching a 71 and 70 for a two-under-par 141.
Senior Joel Myrick (Hattiesburg, Miss.) was next in the scoring with a 147 total (74-73), which put him in a 44th-place tie. Freshman Alex Park (Ithaca, N.Y.) collected rounds of 76 and 72 to tally a 148 total and a tie for 49th.
Freshman Wes Carter (Birmingham, Ala.) posted rounds of 78 and 83 for 161 total strokes and held 62nd place after the first day, while junior Kyle Ramey (Paducah, Ky.) withdrew during the afternoon, due to illness, after putting together a 75 in the opening round.
The other Golden Eagle playing as an individual, freshman Tyler Sparks (Belmont, Miss.), fired rounds of 74 and 72 for a 146 total and 33rd-place tie.
Austin Peay (287-276) and Rhode Island (281-282) lead the team scoring with 563 overall strokes, while Middle Tennessee is next (290-275) at 565, followed by UNC Greensboro (286-281) at 567, USF (280-291) and Louisiana Tech (286-285) at 571, New Orleans (285-291) at 576, Jacksonville State (291-289) at 580, Louisiana-Monroe (287-294) and Troy (287-294) at 591, Arkansas State (296-291) at 587 and Southern Miss (295-302) at 597.
Ben Spitz of URI opened the tournament with a pair of 68 to fire a six-under-par 136 to hold the lead by two strokes over Nick Bailes (69-69) of Middle Tennessee and Yoshio Yamamoto (71-67) of Austin Peay.
The tournament concludes Tuesday morning as players will begin teeing off at 7:30 from both the No. 1 and No. 10 holes.
