HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Lady Eagle soccer team lost to Conference USA leading team SMU, 2-1, Sunday at the Marshall Bell Track and Field and Soccer Complex.
"I think it was a good overall performance," Head Coach Gail Macklin said. "SMU is ranked No. 22 in the nation, and we fought them hard at 2-1. I'm a little disappointed because we made two basic mistakes that cost us, but a part of it was encouraging when senior Sarah Brennan scored on the free kick. There were plenty of other chances, and I thought Sarah McFadden was brilliant up front. There's stuff to build on; we're a young squad. Hopefully, we can regroup and get going again in the spring."
The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead at the 22:43 mark of the first half when Brittainy Vice took a pass from Kimber Bailey, sending the ball past Lady Eagle goalkeeper Christina Duvall.
SMU extended their lead to 2-1 at the 36:04 point of the first half when Caitlin Carter found Jena Lind down field for another goal.
Southern Miss came back in the second half when Sarah Brennan netted her second goal of the season, sending a free kick in the net at 53:50.
The Lady Eagles tallied ten shots with four on goal, while the Mustangs managed twelve shots with seven on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Duvall recorded five saves in the game; SMU's Ashley Gunter finished with three saves.
Sunday's game completes Southern Miss' 2006 schedule, also making it Senior Day. Seniors Carly Barkley, Melissa Planells, Katie Warmington, Andrea Kerkhoff and Kim Turner were honored, alongside their parents, for their hard work, dedication and many contributions to Southern Miss Athletics.
The Lady Eagles finish the season with an overall record of 4-13-1 and 0-9 in the conference. They went 3-5 while playing at home, 1-7-1 while playing away, and 0-1 while playing in a neutral site.
