* The three-point margin was the closest in victory in the series since a Golden Eagle 45-42 victory over the Pirates on Sept. 24, 1988.
* Southern Miss had a four-game home winning streak snapped, dropping the first game at The Rock since a 24-22 loss to Memphis on Nov. 19, 2005.
* The 47-yard field goal by Ben Hartman in the first quarter for ECU marked the first time this season the Golden Eagles have trailed at home this season.
* Sophomore Ed Morgan caught his first career touchdown pass in the first quarter. It was also his first catch of the season and second of his career.
* Eddie Hicks 87-yard interception return for touchdown in the third quarter was the longest interception return in school history. The old record was 84 yards by Bill Martin against Memphis in 1955. Two of the three longest interception returns in Southern Miss history have come against ECU, with the third-longest pick going 80 yard by John Eubanks in 2003 against the Pirates.
* The Hicks interception return for a touchdown was the third non-offensive touchdown for the Golden Eagles this season. The others were a 5-yard fumble return for Cornelius McGee against Southeastern Louisiana and a four-yard interception return by Jerome Lyons against UCF.
* McCaleb missed a 50-yard field goal in third quarter. He is now 1-for-3 from 50 yards or longest this season. He hit his career-long of 50 yards earlier this season against Southeastern Louisiana. McCaleb had hit four in a row before that miss in the third quarter.

* Southern Miss enjoyed its best punt return night of the season as Jasper Faulk tallied four returns for 115 yards including a long of 39.
* Jeremy Young threw his first interception, on the final play of the game in overtime, in the last three games and only the second in the last seven games spanning his last 139 throws.
* Freshman running back Damion Fletcher was held to a season-low 59 yards on 16 carries, returning after missing last week's game with a knee injury.
* It was the first time this season the Golden Eagles were held below 100 yards passing - finishing with 79 - the previous low being 123 at Tulsa.
