HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Baseball program will conclude its fall season with its annual Black-Gold Game on Sunday, October 22, 2006, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, starting at 1:30 p.m. The public is invited at no charge.
"We've had a pretty good fall season," Palmer said. "The position players have worked hard this fall, and I am pleased with their progress. The pitching staff is coming along but that there are still several pitchers competing for some starting spots and bullpen positions.
"Brian Dozier had a great freshman year and continues to get even better at the plate and with his glove. Drew Carson picked up where he left off at the end of last season and has been really showing a lot this fall. James Ewing has made the adjustment to our program and is doing a good job at third base and is solid with the bat. Luke Adkins, Jody Blount, Michael Ewing and Trey Sutton continue to show their offensive ability, and I've seen improvement in Bo Davis' hitting."
Palmer also stated that several freshmen have shown a lot of ability this fall.
"Several freshmen have shown a lot of ability both offensively and defensively," Palmer said. "Tim Foster played infield in high school, and we moved him to the outfield this fall. He has made the adjustment and shown a lot of talent both at the plate and in the field. Jordan King has shown his defensive ability at third base, and Chance Harst has been coming on lately and showing his talent both offensively and behind the plate.
"Ryan Belanger has done a good job this fall," Palmer said. "He worked hard during the summer, and it has shown. From what I have seen so far from the newcomers, Todd McInnis, Jared Cavenaugh and Collin Cargill have showed some good stuff at times. They are still making the adjustment to college baseball and they will be fine."
The Golden Eagles return 17 letterwinners, including five starting position players, two starting pitchers, and six bullpen pitchers from last year's squad that finished 39-23 overall and tied for fourth-place in Conference USA and advanced to its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles have produced a 172-79 record over the past four years for a 68.5 winning percentage.
Southern Miss opens its 2007 season at home hosting the Coca-Cola Classic on Feb. 16-18. Louisville, Northwestern (La.) State and Southern Illinois join the Golden Eagles to complete the field for the classic.
